The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has rejected the declaration of public and social interest for the ‘Majorera I’ photovoltaic plant project. This decision is based on its location in an area deemed susceptible to flooding as per the Hydrological Plan and the land being entirely composed of traditional water catchments known as ‘gavias’. This was approved during the latest meeting of the Insular Corporation’s Governing Council, which agreed to deny the declaration of public and social interest for a project that would impact an area at the entrance to the town of Gran Tarajal, in the municipality of Tuineje.
Unfavourable Reports
Reports from the Cultural Heritage department of the Cabildo and the Insular Water Council were unfavourable. The CIAF report indicates that the area is susceptible to flooding from ordinary floods and is linked to traditional systems like the gavias, thus contravening the island’s hydrological planning.
Cultural Significance of Gavias
Cultural Heritage highlights that the gavias represent a cultural asset associated with traditional agricultural activity, renowned for its heritage, landscape, and hydrological value.
Commitment to Sustainable Energy
The President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, has emphasised the need to develop an energy model that takes into account the unique reality of Majorera. “We will not allow, at any time, for these energy systems to negatively impact our heritage and natural environments.”
The councillor for Territorial Planning, Nereida Calero, has noted that the Cabildo is actively working on the Territorial Energy Plan (Plan-TE), aimed at integrating the deployment of clean energy while protecting Majorera’s territory.
Majorera I Project Overview
The Majorera I photovoltaic plant project is set to cover an area of approximately 4.3 hectares, utilising a total of 7,560 photovoltaic modules. Additionally, an underground electrical line will be required for the evacuation of the energy produced by the plant.
