Call for Increased Security Measures Following Vandalism of Access Barrier in Púlpito Area

Concerns Raised Over Barrier’s Ineffectiveness in Restricting Motor Vehicle Access in Púlpito Area

Following a new complaint from local residents, the Unidas Podemos group in La Laguna Town Hall has alerted the municipal departments of Citizen Security and the Environment about the increasing traffic of motor vehicles on dirt tracks and natural areas between Jardina and Gonzalianez.

Rubens Ascanio, councillor and co-spokesperson for the La Laguna coalition, reports that there is a dirt track near number 79 on Camino de Jardina, which serves as access to new areas for illegal motocross practice and other vehicles. Such activities are prohibited in these areas, causing problems for local residents, livestock, and nearby beehives.

“We have requested an increase in local police activity and for the UPMA to carry out reports, as complainants have mentioned that tyres and other items have been placed to promote illegal motocross practice in areas where it is prohibited, impacting the environment and posing risks to the participants and others using these zones within the La Laguna Cañada,” he explained.

Ascanio noted that this situation coincides with reports that the barrier installed in the Púlpito area—heavily impacted by ongoing erosion due to the traffic of these vehicles—has been destroyed. “It is regrettable that a measure implemented by the Cabildo, with the support of the local governments of La Laguna and Tegueste, has fallen victim to this act of vandalism, which must be investigated,” he stated.

According to the councillor, efforts must continue to engage with the groups representing those who practise this sport, aiming to educate and find locations where this activity can be conducted legally, without risking safety or damaging agricultural or natural spaces. He also calls for increased control measures against those who operate outside the law, adversely affecting the local environment.
