Call for Safety Improvements on Lanzarote’s LZ1 Road
Óscar Noda, a councillor from the Mixed Group at the Lanzarote Island Council, has made a request to the island government regarding the issues surrounding the LZ1 road, which has several notorious accident hotspots along its route.
Noda is calling for improvements at kilometre points 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 of this arterial road, citing the indisputable need for action as these locations have seen numerous accidents over the past three years. “It is the responsibility of Oswaldo Betancort’s government to ensure the safety of Lanzarote’s citizens,” he explained.
He added, “The Directorate General of Traffic proposes or requests works at conflict-prone points of the road network based on various technical and statistical criteria such as accident data, traffic intensity, and road conditions. Based on these factors, we can conclude that the Cabildo should prioritise the improvements I am proposing, as this road has a high accident rate. It is clear that the island’s population growth and record-breaking tourism in recent years make this project essential.”
“The people of Lanzarote deserve greater safety,” Noda continued. “The Cabildo is aware of the number of accidents recorded at these points or stretches, which we refer to as ‘black spots’ due to their above-average accident rate, a consequence of increased Average Daily Traffic (ADT). Measuring devices have been installed in recent months, and this, combined with the accident data, should be an unavoidable call to action for the Lanzarote Cabildo to act as swiftly as possible for the well-being of Lanzarote’s residents,” Noda concluded.
