The Socialist Municipal Group in the Town Hall of Arona has once again demanded solutions in response to the extreme heat that the educational community at the Playa de Las Américas School faces daily, where temperatures on the playground surfaces have been recorded at over 50 degrees Celsius.

The Socialist spokesperson, José Julián Mena, emphasised that this situation exposes children to heat strokes, skin problems, and exhaustion, affecting students, teachers, and families alike. He reminded that this is a repeated demand from the educational community, which is calling for an urgent response.

Call for Action

Socialist councillor Raquel García pointed out that the Socialist Group had already presented a motion in 2023 to collaborate with the Education Department of the Canary Islands government to provide shaded areas in the municipality’s educational centres, which was rejected by the current local government led by Fátima Lemes (PP-CC-Vox). She added that, simultaneously, the PSOE proposed the construction of a covered sports centre at the CEIP Playa de Las Américas, a project that, in her view, would provide shade and health benefits to the school, while also serving as a perfect complement to the Antonio Domínguez Olympic Stadium, located just 100 metres away and lacking covered areas.

Repeated Rejections

García highlighted that the initiative had been defended in the council on two occasions with different proposals, but the tripartite government made up of the Popular Party, Canarian Coalition, and now Vox has consistently rejected what she described as a logical and equitable proposal, which responds to both the climate emergency and the demands of the parents’ associations.

José Julián Mena asserted that, despite the rejections, the PSOE’s commitment in Arona remains unwavering, and that the Socialist Municipal Group will reintroduce this proposal to ensure the municipality has the covered sports facility it urgently needs.
