Canary Government Lifts Marine Pollution Alert Following Fishing Vessel Incident

The Canary Government will, as of 17:00 hours this Sunday, declare the marine pollution alert over in Lanzarote, following the spill caused by the Moroccan fishing vessel that ran aground and caught fire off the coast of Haría, near Órzola.

This announcement was made in a statement by the regional government’s Emergency Management Directorate, which reported that, after control and cleaning operations conducted by the Island’s Consortium for Security and Emergencies, “no signs of contamination” were observed in the vicinity of the shipwreck.

No new spills have been detected at the site, prompting authorities to end the alert status and deactivate the Canary Islands’ Territorial Emergency Civil Protection Plan.

The Ministry of Transport informed on Friday afternoon that it was maintaining the National Maritime Plan for the coast of Lanzarote due to this incident, although the alert status was downgraded by one level, moving from emergency to alert.

The fishing vessel ran aground in the early hours of last Wednesday off the coast of Haría, near the village of Órzola, and the captain reported its theft.

It is estimated that the vessel had set sail from Morocco with around 5,500 litres of diesel, although a significant portion of the fuel remaining in its tanks was burned during the fire.
