SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, has expressed his administration’s opposition to the cancellation of debt for autonomous communities and announced that he will initiate a legal and political “battle” to prevent it from happening.
“We cannot defend this, we cannot support it, and we will not back it as the Government of the Canary Islands,” he stated following a meeting with parliamentary groups aimed at garnering support for a “strategy” that compels the Government to amend the distribution criteria.
Clavijo asserted that any debt cancellation must be “the same” for all Spaniards, advocating for an adjusted population criterion to ensure that all regions are on an “equal footing.”
“We are neither more nor less than others; otherwise, the Canary Islanders would be paying off the debts of the Catalans,” he remarked, emphasising that the Government will not be “complicit” in “mortgaging the future” of those living in the archipelago and worsening a situation that is already difficult and complex from a social standpoint.
