Canary Islands Government Reports Slow Progress in Migrant Youth Transfers Amid Ongoing Emergency

The spokesperson for the Government of the Canary Islands, Alfonso Cabello, has highlighted that only 93 unaccompanied migrant minors, from nearly 1,000 eligible for asylum, have left the islands for centres on the mainland.

He made this statement on Monday during the press conference following the Council of Government meeting. He added that the Executive positively assesses the work that has been done, “but neither the pace, nor the manner, nor the intensity of these transfers are adequate to reverse the migration emergency, reduce overcrowding, or meet the Supreme Court’s requirements for the State.”

Current Migrant Situation

Regarding the ongoing migration contingency situation in the Canary Islands, Cabello remarked that since it began on 29 August, two pathways have been established for migrant minors.

On one hand, there are nearly 1,000 individuals entitled to asylum (93 of whom have been transferred), and on the other, the remaining 4,877 young people who have not applied for this form of protection and are being cared for in 85 centres managed by the Government of the Canary Islands.

Upcoming Transfers

Transfers to other autonomous communities will apply to the latter group, as the guardianship of those entitled to asylum falls to the State.

In this regard, last Wednesday, the first unaccompanied minor affected by the migration contingency arrived in Lanzarote, with three additional youths claiming to be unaccompanied but not confirmed as such during an initial inspection.

He also added that the Government of the Canary Islands is currently preparing the singular file for these four minors, allowing them the right to participate, explaining their situation and circumstances. “We hope and are counting on this transfer happening over the next few days,” he noted.
