The spokesperson for the Government of the Canary Islands, Alfonso Cabello, has stated that the Executive will submit a draft of the so-called ‘Canary Decree Law’ to the State in the coming weeks. This was proposed last week by regional president Fernando Clavijo during his meeting with national president Pedro Sánchez.Canary Islands Government to Present Draft ‘Canarian Law Decree’ to State for Urgent Priorities

During the press conference following the Governing Council meeting, Cabello added that this decree law aims to expedite the fulfilment of national commitments included in the Canary Agenda.

Priority Issues for the Canary Islands

“We must ensure that commitments to the Canary Islands are met, and to achieve this, we demand the State’s approval of this decree law, which will outline priorities within the framework of the Canary Agenda,” Cabello noted.

In this regard, he explained that the ‘Canary Decree Law’ encompasses several matters whose ratification in the Congress of Deputies has been delayed, unlike issues from other autonomous communities.

“We are calling for a specific decree law that clearly lays out those matters that are uncontroversial and are priorities for the Canary Islands. And from there, let’s see who supports these priority issues for the Canary Islands and who does not,” he continued.

Urgent Government Response Needed

Among these issues are the hydraulic works agreement, measures for the reconstruction of La Palma, POSEI aid, increased funding for housing, and enhanced employment policies, among others.

“All these matters require an urgent response from the State Government, and we want to make it very straightforward. Therefore, the line we are working on is to present a draft of this decree law on the State’s table over the coming weeks,” he concluded.
