The Canary Islands enter the new week under intense heat, haze, and strong winds, with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasting maximum temperatures above 30ºC and issuing several yellow alerts for both Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 August.

Temperatures will remain high and relatively stable across the islands, though certain areas will see extreme values:

  • Gran Canaria: Up to 36ºC in the southeast, south, west, and the Tejeda basin. Minimums around 25ºC in these same zones.
  • Western islands (Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro): Highs of 34ºC in the midlands facing south, east, and west.
  • Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: Maximums between 30 and 34ºC, particularly in the southern interior and southeast.

Calima will be present at altitude, reducing visibility in mid- and high-altitude areas.

The wind will blow from the northeast, moderate to strong, with very strong gusts in areas exposed to the trade winds: the southern slopes of Anaga (Tenerife), Jandía (Fuerteventura), the midlands of Gran Canaria, and the exposed ends of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Maritime conditions will also be adverse, with north or northeast winds of force 5–6, locally 7 in the southeast and western offshore areas. Heavy swells are expected, accompanied by a north swell of 1–2 metres.

  • Tenerife: Clear or slightly cloudy, with intervals in the northeast below 500 m. Highs of 34ºC in southern, eastern and western midlands. Strong gusts on the southeast coast, extreme northwest and southern slopes of Anaga. Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 25ºC / 30ºC.
  • Gran Canaria: Mostly clear, with calima at altitude. Peaks of up to 36ºC in the southeast, south, west and Tejeda basin. Strong northeast wind with very strong gusts at dawn and afternoon. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 23ºC / 26ºC.
  • La Palma: Partly cloudy in the northeast, otherwise clear. Highs up to 34ºC in the El Paso midlands. Strong winds in the southeast and northwest, with very strong gusts in the afternoon. Santa Cruz de La Palma: 24ºC / 26ºC.
  • La Gomera: Clear skies with some intervals in the north. Highs of 34ºC in the southern, eastern and western midlands. Strong northeast winds on the southeast and northwest slopes. San Sebastián de La Gomera: 24ºC / 28ºC.
  • El Hierro: Clear with some cloud in the northeast. Highs of 34ºC in midlands. Strong northeast winds on the southeast coast and extreme west. Valverde: 19ºC / 25ºC.
  • Fuerteventura: Clear or slightly cloudy, with highs of up to 34ºC in the southern interior. Strong gusts in Jandía in the afternoon. Puerto del Rosario: 24ºC / 29ºC.
  • Lanzarote: Clear skies, some cloud in the north by evening. Highs of 30–32ºC in the southeast. Strong gusts in the southern interior. Arrecife: 23ºC / 31ºC.

AEMET has issued yellow alerts for high temperatures and coastal phenomena affecting several islands:

  • Monday, 18 August:
    • Heat between 11:00 and 19:59 in Gran Canaria (midlands and peaks of the southeast, south, west, Tejeda basin), La Palma (southern and western midlands), and similar areas of La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife. Maximums of 34–35ºC expected.
    • Coastal phenomena from 18:00 to 23:59 in the east, south, and west of Gran Canaria; the east of La Palma; and exposed coasts of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro. Winds of 50–61 km/h, locally stronger in La Gomera.
  • Tuesday, 19 August:
    • Heat warnings continue between 11:00 and 19:59, particularly in the south and west of Gran Canaria (up to 34ºC).
    • Coastal phenomena will again affect the east, south and west of Gran Canaria and Tenerife throughout the day.
    • In La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, alerts will be active from midnight until 04:59, and an additional warning has been issued for La Gomera in the evening (18:00–23:59), with winds of 50–61 km/h in the west and southeast.

The Canary Islands face the start of the week under a combination of heat, haze, and strong winds, with conditions expected to persist at least until Tuesday. Residents are advised to take precautions against high temperatures, avoid prolonged sun exposure during central hours of the day, and exercise caution near exposed coastal areas.
