Canary Islands Parliament Calls for Two-State Solution Amid Ongoing Conflict

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 23 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Parliament of the Canary Islands approved an institutional declaration on Tuesday, with opposition from Vox, advocating for the existence of two distinct states—Palestine and Israel—as a solution to the ongoing conflict, while calling for a ceasefire.

Condemnation of Violence

The text, presented by the Vice President of the Chamber, Ana Oramas, states that the attacks by Hamas against the Israeli civilian population “constitute utterly unjustifiable war crimes”. At the same time, it criticises the “massive and disproportionate destruction campaign” by the Israeli government after nearly two years of conflict.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The statement notes that Gaza has already seen over 65,000 fatalities—of which more than 19,000 are children—with over 165,700 injured and almost 2 million displaced individuals “without guaranteed access to food, potable water, medical care, or safe shelter”.

Furthermore, it highlights an “official famine” in Gaza, stating that 21,000 children have acquired some form of disability since the conflict began, as human rights are violated with attacks on hospitals, schools, universities, United Nations facilities, and places of worship.

In fact, over 240 journalists and more than 500 humanitarian workers have lost their lives in the conflict.

Call for International Action

Consequently, the Parliament expresses its “strong condemnation of the systematic violence against the Palestinian people, as well as the deliberate destruction of their civil and humanitarian infrastructure”, extending solidarity to all civilian victims.

At the same time, it urges the international community, particularly the European Union and the Government of Spain, to intensify diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to ensure an immediate and permanent ceasefire, effective protection for the civilian population, unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and to adopt temporary protective measures for Palestinian families in situations of heightened vulnerability.

Commitment to International Law

The Parliament of the Canary Islands also underscores its “commitment” to international legality, the defence of human rights, and peace, as well as solidarity with the Palestinian people, especially those who have been direct victims of violence, forced displacement, or the destruction of their homes and infrastructure.
