Transport Strike Announced in Las Palmas Province

Demands for Collective Agreement

Among the demands is the establishment of a provincial collective agreement, a reduction of the working week to 37.5 hours, salary harmonisation, full incorporation of new legal provisions regarding leave and permits, and equal working conditions for all personnel in the sector.

The Federation of Services to the Citizen of Comisiones Obreras Canarias (FSC-CCOO) announced on Thursday that it has filed notice of a strike in the intercity transport sector in the province of Las Palmas, starting on 15 September in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with Gran Canaria following on 17 September.

Lack of Negotiation Progress

The union explained in a statement that the decision arose due to “the lack of progress in the negotiating table for the collective agreement, which has been in place since January 2025.”

“Despite union proposals, the employers, represented by the Association of Regular Passenger Transport Companies (ARV), have not put forward a clear counterproposal nor shown willingness to reach an agreement that guarantees the equalisation of working conditions in the province,” the statement indicates.

Strike Details

Strikes will occur in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura on 15 and 16 September, continuing in subsequent days with intermittent disruptions from 06:00 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00. In Gran Canaria, the strike will commence on 17 and 18 September, following the same pattern of intermittent strikes.

CCOO notes that the principal triggers for the strike include the stagnation of negotiations for the sectoral agreement, the employers’ intention to replace it with a framework agreement that would fragment rights and hinder the homogenisation of working conditions, the refusal to guarantee stable validity of the agreement until 2032, and the employer’s rejection of a unified salary table that prevents inequalities among workers performing the same activities.

Union’s Objectives

The union asserts that the strike aims to “ensure the signing of a provincial collective agreement, the inclusion of personnel subrogation in cases of contract changes or concessions, reduction of the working week to 37.5 hours, salary harmonisation, full incorporation of new legal provisions on leave and permits, and equal working conditions for all personnel in the sector in the province of Las Palmas.”

Finally, the Strike Committee and FSC-CCOO reaffirm their willingness to resume dialogue with employer representation, either directly or through the Canary Labour Court, to reach an agreement that guarantees rights and ends the conflict,” concludes the statement.
