Clavijo Supports Application of Migrant Minor Distribution Law Amid Baleares’ Migratory Contingency

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has stated that the implementation of the royal decree establishing the procedure for the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors “is beneficial even for the Balearic Islands,” as the autonomous community is on the brink of entering a migrant contingency.

This was expressed on Saturday during a media briefing in La Gomera, in response to questions regarding the Supreme Court’s admission of the administrative contentious appeal presented by the legal representatives of the Balearic Autonomous Community against the measure approved in the Council of Ministers.

“I have always said that if any autonomous community feels that its rights are being infringed, it will seek recourse in the courts. However, that does not preclude the enforcement of an approved law. The migrant contingency has already been declared and the mechanism outlined in Article 35, which has been amended, must be established,” he remarked.

Clavijo noted that once the Supreme Court accepts the appeal, it will need to delve into the substance of the matter. He emphasised, “The reality is that the law is in effect and must be applied while it is in force.”

Impact on Balearic Islands

“Moreover, I believe it is advantageous for it to be applied even to the Balearic Islands, as they are also on the verge of entering a migrant contingency, which signifies relief for the overcrowding of all the minors arriving at their shores,” the Canary Islander concluded.
