New Student Accommodation Planned in La Laguna

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 3 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Meeting to Discuss Student Residences

The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the Rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco García, held a follow-up meeting this week ahead of the new academic year. They discussed plans for the construction of two student residences on the plot located below the Faculty of Journalism, which is already owned by the municipality, and in the vicinity of Montaña del Drago, in San Miguel de Geneto.

Affordable Accommodation for Students

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasised that “these two buildings would fulfil a dual purpose, providing a more affordable housing alternative for students who rely on rental properties, while simultaneously freeing up properties for the rest of the community in an increasingly strained housing market on the island.”

University Support for the Initiative

The Rector of the University of La Laguna expressed his “full support and collaboration” for these initiatives, which are expected to be developed through an agreement with a private company, highlighting that this is one of the “significant challenges” both institutions face together.

“Our educational community consists of over 20,000 individuals, and currently, we have around 550 places in our own residences. However, our demand for accommodation spaces doubles this figure, so this proposal would provide significant relief for the university and also for the wider population,” added Francisco García.

Potential Impact on Housing Demand

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez revealed that “these two new residences could provide more than 800 beds for university use, which would immediately alleviate a significant rental demand in our area.”

Continued Efforts for More Accommodation

Additionally, the Mayor mentioned that the La Laguna Town Hall is actively seeking new available land to develop more housing resources for this purpose and other social uses.

Support for Educational Initiatives

During the meeting, other relevant topics were also discussed, including the renewal of the Town Hall’s support for new editions of Campus África, Campus América, and Campus Ciudad de La Laguna.

At this point, the Rector of the ULL expressed gratitude for the complete understanding and readiness the Town Hall has shown towards the university in recent years, facilitating the advancement of these and other initiatives, as noted in a statement from the municipal office.
