World Car-Free Day Celebrated in Corralejo

Environmental awareness, healthy habits, and promoting the use of bicycles were the key themes of World Car-Free Day, celebrated by the La Oliva Town Council on the morning of 22nd September in Corralejo. The Council’s Environment Department, led by David Fajardo, collaborated with the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura, presided over by Lola García, specifically through the Transport Department managed by Luis González. This event targeted students from the CEIP Bernabé Figueroa, Maria Castrillo, and Antoñito El Farero schools in Corralejo, dedicating a day to the importance of environmental care and healthy habits from an early age.

Engaging Activities for Youngsters

The young participants enjoyed a morning filled with activities, learning about the impact of carbon footprints on the environment. They engaged in discussions about pollution, participated in games and traffic circuits, and debated the importance of awareness regarding our natural surroundings. The students concluded their day with a talk on road safety conducted by the Local Police.

The Mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, emphasised the significance of fostering environmental awareness and promoting healthy activities from a young age. “World Car-Free Day is the perfect opportunity to show our children the importance of their actions regarding the environment. Moreover, cycling and activities that promote a healthier lifestyle help them take care of our most precious asset, nature.”

David Fajardo, the Councillor for Environment, expressed a commitment to continue promoting activities that inspire environmental responsibility among new generations. “Instilling the importance of their actions in our schoolchildren is crucial not only for environmental awareness but also for the everyday lives of future generations. In this regard, building healthy habits at an early age enables young people to adopt a lifestyle that benefits their health on all levels.”

Environmental guides were also present during the event to support the promotional activities. This underscores the Council’s commitment to fostering environmentally conscious behaviours and healthy habits among future generations.
