Corujo Criticises Betancort’s Proposals as ‘Smokescreens’ Amid Housing Crisis in Lanzarote

Corujo: “Betancort is creating smoke screens instead of confronting the reality facing families in Lanzarote”

The PSOE of Lanzarote has strongly criticised Oswaldo Betancort’s remarks at the Islas con futuro forum, where he called for a specific law for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, similar to the so-called “Green Islands” legislation.

The secretary of the PSOE in Lanzarote and congresswoman, María Dolores Corujo, emphasised that this proposal is yet another example of the inconsistencies and lack of direction demonstrated by the president of the Cabildo. “For Betancort to request a specific law as if he were not a deputy and not governing with CC shows a disregard for Lanzarote and reveals his inability to govern with dignity,” stated Corujo.

The socialist leader pointed out that what lies behind this proposal is merely a smoke screen to mask his inaction: “It is an insult to the intelligence of the public to see Betancort present himself as a deputy, instead of taking responsibility as part of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo. This is not about new laws, but about utilising the tools that already exist and which CC refuses to implement.”

Corujo reminded everyone that while Betancort boasts about removing “a hundred and something” tourist housing units, thousands of new places have entered the market over the years. In fact, since Coalición Canaria has been in power at both the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, vacation rental properties have increased by 80% in Lanzarote.

The solution is not tailored laws from CC

“It is not serious to take credit for the removal of a few tourist beds when the growth of vacation housing is uncontrolled and rental prices are unaffordable for families. The reality is that CC has failed to apply the Housing Law, which would set a cap on rentals, condemning thousands of young people and families to residential exclusion. They are busy creating smoke screens instead of facing the reality that impacts families,” she denounced.

The PSOE of Lanzarote concluded that the island does not need more ideas or tailored laws from Coalición Canaria, but rather a firm commitment to real measures: limiting tourist growth, enforcing the Housing Law, controlling the expansion of holiday rentals, and guaranteeing basic resources such as water.

“What is needed is responsibility and political courage, not hollow speeches. Lanzarote needs solutions, not a president more focused on headlines than on governance,” concluded Corujo.
