The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Cultural Area, presents a September programme that combines craftsmanship and tradition, oral literature, vibrant music, quality film, conferences, and relevant exhibitions for all audiences. This is a month to reconnect with the spaces, heritage, and local and international talent of the island.
Cultural Commitment
The Councillor for Culture, Jesús Machín Tavío, emphasises that “September reinforces the Cabildo’s commitment to an accessible and contemporary culture: from the Palabras al Vuelo Festival to the promotion of live craftsmanship, plus music, thought-provoking films, and various cultural talks.”
Craft Fair
From 10th to 15th September, Mancha Blanca will host the 36th Lanzarote Craft Fair, featuring over 120 artisans, live workshops, musical performances, and the 2025 Craft Awards. This edition of the Fair promises numerous innovations in its commitment to both traditional and contemporary craftsmanship, establishing a significant meeting point dedicated to the revival of trades and customs that define our islands, all while looking towards the future.
Oral Storytelling Festival
This oral storytelling festival returns from 27th September to 12th October, showcasing performances that journey from traditional legends to contemporary experiences. Storytellers from the Canary Islands, Europe, and America will immerse themselves in unique spaces, from educational centres to natural environments.
Musical Events
On Friday 5th, the Tensamba Festival will feature the Pedro Rosa Quintet at El Almacén, showcasing their latest work “Midnight Alvorada.” Additionally, on Tuesday 9th, there will be a conference-concert titled “Weaving Emotions through Music,” led by Laura Vega, exploring the journey of musical creation from inspiration to performance.
Film Screenings
The Buñuel Cinema at El Almacén reopens this September with three screenings focusing on journeys, emotional tension, and art as mystery. The series will include “On the Go,” the debut feature by María Gisèle Royo and Julia de Castro, a vibrant road movie about friendship, desire, and freedom. Following that is “Septiembre dice,” the debut film of Ariane Labed based on Daisy Johnson’s novel “Hermanas,” which delves into the toxic relationship between two young women in a tense family environment. Finally, “The Sleeper,” a documentary by Álvaro Longoria, tells the unusual story of the race to recover a lost Caravaggio, revealing the intricacies of the art market.
Tribute to Roberto Pérez Toledo
This month’s agenda pays tribute to the Lanzarote filmmaker Roberto Pérez Toledo with “Manual básico de lengua de signos para romper corazones,” his first and only theatrical work. This touching love story between a deaf boy and a hearing boy unfolds as they learn to communicate while unveiling their emotional wounds. It will be shown at “El Salinero.”
Critical Reflection
September also offers a space for thought, words, and critical reflection through various activities. As part of the collective exhibition “Arte, palabra y pensamiento,” participating artists will discuss with art historian Estefanía Camejo in “Collages and Women,” exploring collage as a technique and expanded language. The exhibition catalogue for “raya” by artist Ángel Padrón will also be presented, accompanied by texts from Dalia de la Rosa and Melchor López. Photographer Teresa Correa will give a talk titled “The Periphery is the Centre,” analysing her links between archaeology, museums, and visual activism. Additionally, the month includes a Survival Day for musicians and bands, as well as a talk by Tina Suárez on the mysteries of the poetic creative process.
Exhibitions and Installations
This month marks the opening of the “JUIN. You too have rained. How to navigate pain” exhibition at the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz, which opens on 5th September. Other exhibitions include “Macaronesia 1975–2025” (Casa Amarilla), “Arte, palabra y pensamiento,” and “Atlas of latent gesture installation” (El Almacén), all available until the end of the month. At the end of the month, visual artist Darío Machín will present his latest work, “Crystallisation of a puddle,” an instalment at the La Cabina space of the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC).
Cultural Agenda Cover
The cover image of this September’s cultural agenda features singer Almudena Hernández Toledo, dressed in a gown lent by the Lanzarote Choirs and Dances group, recreating traditional island attire from the 18th and 19th centuries, providing a visual nod to the island’s history within this month’s programme.
