The José Saramago House Museum in Tías will become a cultural hub this weekend with the celebration of the Tribute to Canary Islands Women Writers, an event aimed at recognising the achievements and legacy of the authors from the Archipelago.
The event will take place on Friday, 26th September, and Saturday, 27th September, featuring a programme that includes roundtable discussions, public readings, and guided tours of the museum. This will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage with the work of these writers as well as the humanist spirit of the Portuguese Nobel Laureate who lived in Lanzarote.
The inaugural event, scheduled for Friday at 19:00, will feature writers, researchers, and cultural representatives reflecting on the role of women in Canary Islands literature and the current challenges of literary creation. The following day, starting at 10:30, the programme will continue with collective readings and a guided tour of the José Saramago House Museum.
Organised by the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Writers’ Association in collaboration with the José Saramago House Museum, the tribute has the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and the Tías Town Council.
The organisers emphasise that this gathering aims to highlight both established and emerging women writers from the islands who are enriching the cultural landscape of the Archipelago. It also serves as a platform for exchange and reflection, in line with Saramago’s famous quote: “The voice of those who write is an act of resistance. Writing is raising one’s voice for oneself and for others.”
Participation is open to both authors and interested readers who wish to join the activities. Registration can be made by sending personal details to [email protected].
