Darío Machín presents the installation Crystallisation of a Puddle at La Cabina of MIAC Lanzarote, open until 19 December

The exhibition will be inaugurated on Saturday, 27 September at 12:00 and will remain open until 19 December at the International Museum of Contemporary Art, MIAC – Castillo de San José.

The International Museum of Contemporary Art, MIAC – Castillo de San José, will inaugurate the project Crystallisation of a Puddle by Lanzarote artist Darío Machín on Saturday, 27 September. This site-specific installation will be displayed in the unique space La Cabina and will be accessible to the public until 19 December.

The proposal revolves around salt as a symbolic, transformative, and adaptable material, linked to both the landscape and the cultural memory of Lanzarote.

Through a theoretical and practical investigation, Machín explores the states of salt in coastal environments, presenting it as a poetic and critical element that reflects how this resource has shaped island life, traditional architecture, and salt landscapes.

An Installation that Engages with the Territory

The installation comprises sculptural pieces made of wood and textiles subjected to natural drying processes with sea salt, evoking the architectural language of the salt flats.

One of the central themes of the work is the scale recreation of the stone walls of the Salinas de Naos, now disused, which are integrated into an artificial salt flat filled with water from Las Salinas de Janubio.

Throughout the exhibition, evaporation will allow visitors to observe the crystallisation of the salt in real-time.

Thus, Crystallisation of a Puddle establishes a dialogue between the museum space and the memory of the salt trade and port activities in Arrecife, reinforcing the connection between contemporary art and local heritage.

Artist’s Background

Darío Machín, a visual artist from Lanzarote, develops his work around installation, employing ceramic, textile, and graphic techniques.

His research focuses on the relationship between volumetrics and photography of the intervened spaces, generating a critical perspective on the territory and memory.

He has participated in group exhibitions in Valencia, Madrid, and the Canary Islands, showcasing his works in venues such as the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània, the Hybrid Art Fair, and MIAC itself.

Project Selected in the Call of the Tourist Centres

Crystallisation of a Puddle is one of the projects chosen in the public call by the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote (CACT) to enrich their cultural programming for 2025.

With this initiative, MIAC reaffirms its commitment to contemporary creation that engages with the landscape, memory, and natural resources of the island.
