The Municipal Institute of Social Care (IMAS) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, led by Councillor Charín González, has approved a grant of €250,000 for the project Emergency Shelter for Mothers in Social Crisis, managed by the Asociación Nuevo Futuro Tenerife.
The initiative aims to provide a comprehensive response to the vulnerability faced by mothers with dependent children or those who are pregnant and lacking housing and financial resources.
Strategic Commitment to Social Policies
The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, highlighted the importance of such projects, stating that “this Council is firmly and prioritively committed to social policies, as shown by our support for families in vulnerable situations, which is not only a moral obligation but also an investment in the future of our city.”
Furthermore, Bermúdez noted that “projects like Nuevo Futuro demonstrate our ability to collaborate with community organisations and ensure that every resident can receive assistance, providing a support network that promotes inclusion and autonomy.”
Details of the Project
In addition, the Councillor for Social Policies, Charín González, delved into the details of the project, explaining that “this grant allows us to take a crucial step in addressing the social crisis experienced by many mothers in our capital. The Emergency Shelter project does not merely provide a roof; it seeks to empower these families in a comprehensive manner.”
“We are working,” asserts González, “on an individualised care plan for each mother, addressing key areas such as employment training, personal development, health, and housing search, as our goal is for these families not only to overcome their emergency situation but also to build a solid and autonomous future. Additionally, she indicates that “in the 2026 budget, an increase in the grant for this shelter project will be implemented.”
