Councillor Migdalia Machín signs the grant order for the restoration of this historic building designated as a Cultural Heritage Asset

The Department of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, through a collaboration agreement with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, is contributing over four million euros towards the renovation of the Teatro Guimerá. This historic building is recognised as a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC) in the category of a monument and is part of the protected cultural heritage within its designated conservation area.

Investment in Comprehensive Reform

The grant totals over four million euros (€4,174,340) and is primarily allocated to finance a comprehensive reform of the building, ensuring structural safety, accessibility, and conservation of ornamental elements.

A Cultural Landmark

With a history spanning over 160 years, the Teatro Guimerá continues to host performances and cultural activities throughout its programming seasons. Its historical, architectural, and artistic value is undeniable, and the rehabilitation efforts aim to preserve these attributes against the deterioration caused by time. In light of this, various intervention strategies have been developed to restore ornamental features and furniture, as well as address different structural issues identified within the building.

Coordinated Project Execution

To ensure these interventions are executed in a coordinated manner within a single construction contract, previous proposals have been consolidated into one project. This has resulted in the “Basic and Execution Project for the Rehabilitation of the Teatro Guimerá,” which was approved by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council’s Governing Board on 17 February 2025.

Emphasis on Cultural Protection

The councillor emphasises that this agreement “underscores the obligation to report any events that may jeopardise the integrity of cultural assets and highlights the need for coordinated actions among various institutions for the protection and management of Canary Islands heritage.” Migdalia Machín also notes that “the agreement includes initiatives to disseminate knowledge and appreciation of the cultural assets of the Canary Islands, integrating them into educational systems and establishing programmes to bring heritage closer to the public in collaboration with the relevant public administrations.”

Objective of the Agreement

The agreement establishes funding for the various interventions required for the building, aiming to move towards a comprehensive reform of the Teatro Guimerá that will allow for the recovery of the heritage it houses.
