Gran Canaria Installs Photovoltaic Canopies for Sustainable Energy
The installation of 2,244 bifacial modules, each with a capacity of 660 Wp, will produce a peak power of 1.48 MWp and a nominal power of 1.34 MW. This initiative includes four storage systems, ensuring a constant supply of 400 kW round the clock.
The Gran Canaria Island Energy Council (CIEGC), part of the island’s Cabildo, has awarded the contract for the installation of photovoltaic canopies in the Arinaga Industrial Estate for a total of €5,145,608.25, as reported by the island’s government.
Supporting the Energy Community
With a peak power of 1.48 MWp and a storage system of 12 MWh, the project aims to support the energy community in the area, establishing Gran Canaria as a model eco-island, according to the Cabildo.
Clean Canarian Energy SL will undertake the works, expected to be completed within nine months following the contract signing on 19 August 2025.
Funding through European Initiatives
This project is part of the first call for grants for electricity generation from renewable sources in the Canary Islands, under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU, and allocated by the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE).
The initiative involves the installation of 2,244 bifacial modules, producing an estimated annual output of over 2.43 million kWh. This energy will be entirely dedicated to collective self-consumption in the area, preventing the emission of approximately 1,885 tonnes of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the environmental benefit of more than 11,000 trees and sufficient to cover the electricity consumption of around 697 standard homes.
Urban Benefits
The installation will spread across four distinct areas of the industrial estate, covering more than 1.5 kilometres of photovoltaic canopies. These will serve various urban functions, such as supporting the future green corridor along Calle Casuarinas and its cycling and pedestrian lanes, providing shade for approximately 90 parking spaces, and creating shaded areas within the urban park of Arinaga.
