The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has completed the rehabilitation of the Casa del Coronel market in La Oliva as part of the ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ Tourism Sustainability Plan. Following the completion of the works, the project has been handed over to La Oliva Town Council for its upcoming inauguration and management as a space for community engagement for both residents and visitors.

The President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, and Councillor Marlene Figueroa personally inspected the results of the work during the handover event, alongside the Mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, the Councillor for Commerce, Alexandra Martín, and the Councillor for Culture, David Hernández.

President Lola García highlighted the successful elements of the project, noting that it not only enhances the functionality and competitiveness of this space but also modernises an important location within the municipality.

Meanwhile, Tourism Councillor Marlene Figueroa explained, “This rehabilitation ensures greater accessibility, sustainability, and functionality of the building.” She added, “Upon completion and handover of the works, it will be managed by La Oliva Town Council, which is responsible for energising the space for both residents and visitors.”

Mayor Isaí Blanco, along with Councillors Alexandra Martín and David Hernández, expressed their gratitude for the coordination between administrations within a plan promoted by the Cabildo, which facilitates projects that enhance the tourist appeal of all municipalities.

This initiative is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD) ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’, directed by Councillor Marlene Figueroa. The investment allocated for this project amounts to €257,582.

The works covered an area of 243.77 square metres, involving structural and architectural interventions that consolidate existing elements while preserving the building’s heritage value. Additionally, a new roof has been constructed over the annexed areas, aimed at improving the protection and durability of the property.

The interior redistribution of spaces has allowed for the creation of an interpretation centre, new commercial areas, accessible restrooms, and a small storage area. Externally, pergolas have been installed to facilitate the hosting of outdoor markets.

The PSTD ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ has a total budget of €9.1 million, financed by the European Next Generation EU programme under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR).

This plan has already seen other notable actions executed, such as the restoration of the Torre del Tostón in El Cotillo, the refurbishment of the promenade in Puerto del Rosario, the installation of photovoltaic canopies across the six municipalities, as well as projects focusing on shaded areas and enhancements to waste collection on the beaches.
