El Golfo’s Sewerage Works Set to Commence
The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the awarded contractor, UTE Tiagua-Horinsa, signed the planning act on Tuesday, enabling the commencement of sewerage works in the coastal town of El Golfo, within the municipality of Yaiza.
Project Details
The project, awarded at a cost of €1.4 million with an execution timeline of ten months, includes the installation of a wastewater treatment plant (EDAR), the construction of a sewer network, and a system for the storage and reuse of treated water. This long-awaited initiative had been stalled for years, but the current governing group, led by Oswaldo Betancort, has managed to set it in motion in record time.

Oswaldo Betancort, President of the Cabildo and the Lanzarote Water Consortium, stated, “Today we take a historic step that unblocks a project that has been stuck for years and was a legitimate demand from the residents of El Golfo. This government committed to resolve it, and we have delivered. The signing of the planning act guarantees that the machinery will begin work, making the transformation of the locality a reality. We uphold our promise and secure public investment to ensure access to state funding for a project originating from a 2017 agreement, with a deadline set for December of this year.”
Domingo Cejas, the Councillor for Water and Vice President of the Water Consortium, emphasised the effort taken to reach this point, affirming, “As of today, the execution period of this strategic project begins, which will ensure a qualitative leap in the quality of life for residents and the environmental sustainability of El Golfo. The technical team at the Consortium has worked diligently to make this signing possible, ensuring that the inaction of the previous government does not adversely affect the residents of El Golfo. The current island government has never considered relinquishing this project.”

A planning act constitutes formal acceptance that the contractor can commence work, confirms that the site aligns with the project plans, and marks the beginning of the contractual timeline for execution.
