The PSOE of Fuerteventura, through its Secretariat for Food and Food Sovereignty, is urging the Government of the Canary Islands to consider expanding the scope of the project ‘Modernisation and Improvement of Irrigation in the Central-Southern Area of Fuerteventura’. The aim is for the irrigation facilities to cover all agricultural parcels that can be supplied from the Tesejerague reservoir by gravity. José Cabrera, the Secretary for Food and Food Sovereignty of the PSOE of Fuerteventura, emphasises that “it is time for the project approved by the government of Ángel Víctor Torres to proceed. We want to make Tuineje and Fuerteventura a model to be emulated by other islands regarding water management for local food production.”

“The current Government of the Canary Islands has fulfilled its role in executing the project approved by President Torres. Now is the moment to take initiative and show ambition, because there is no reason to leave anyone behind or deny them access to water.”

The ‘Modernisation and Improvement of Irrigation in the Central-Southern Area of Fuerteventura’ project, approved by the government of Ángel Víctor Torres, represents a significant advancement for small farmers in Tuineje and Pájara. This phase involves a substantial investment of €13.2 million, provided by the State Society for Agricultural Infrastructures (Seiasa) and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.

Key achievements include the Tesejerague reservoir and the installation of unconventional water supply to it, thus preventing the use of potable water for agricultural purposes. Once this large reservoir is constructed, the project anticipates that agricultural water will be distributed by gravity.

“Therefore, now is the moment to demonstrate the true potential of this ambitious project. It must also be ensured that all small farmers below the Tesejerague level have access to this water. This way, they can serve as an example of local production and intelligent water use on an island particularly affected by scarcity,” concludes José Cabrera.
