The CB Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen Women’s Division of Honour Gold team commenced its pre-season on Monday at the Municipal Stadium in Tías, filled with optimism for a new campaign at the elite level, with a clear aim of ensuring their survival in the league.

The first session began with a poignant minute of silence in memory of Mario Hernández Barrios, a member of the Tías City Council who recently passed away, a gesture that brought together players, coaching staff, and fans in a respectful start to the season.

The Tías team faces the season with few new faces, notably the arrival of Andrea Guerrero and the appointment of Jesús Casanova as head coach, alongside Sonia González as assistant coach. In the early stages of their training, sessions will be led by Toño Cedrés, responsible for getting the squad in peak physical condition.

The league opener will not be easy: the team will travel to Andalusia to face Rahi-Sepisur Córdoba (Adesal Córdoba), a seasoned opponent in the league who finished last season in fifth place with a record of 14 wins, 4 draws, and 8 losses. The memories of recent encounters with the Cordoban team are still vivid: a clear defeat in the first leg (29-16) and a narrow loss at home in Tías (23-25).

The Andalusian side, coached by Rafa Moreno, has strengthened its squad with quality players such as Argentine Camila Bonazzola, pivot Mari Miranda, goalkeepers Inma García and Yarke Moreno, as well as centre Carla Montero. Additionally, there is the added joy of Zoe Turnes winning the beach handball world title with the Argentine national team over the summer.

Meanwhile, new Puerto del Carmen coach Jesús Casanova expressed his enthusiasm at the start of the season: “We are expecting a tough but exciting season. We have a very young team, perhaps overly so, but with enough quality to secure our survival. Now it’s time to work hard in training to arrive in the best shape possible for the start of the league. Defending and running a lot will be key; we need to play very physical matches to have a chance of victory.”

The team hopes to confirm a new signing in the coming days that could join the Tías project.
