This Monday, the Festival of the Elderly marked one of the most emotional days in the programme of the Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna, gathering hundreds of people at the square of the Christ. The musical performances by Tamara, Helena Bianco and Los Mismos, Pepe Benavente, and a surprise intervention by King África had the audience dancing and singing, while they also enjoyed hearty laughter from the humour of Juanito Panchín.
Mayor’s Remarks
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, the Mayor of La Laguna, emphasised the significant role this festival plays within the Fiestas del Cristo, as it highlights the contributions of the elderly, reminding us of their active involvement in our society. “Elderly individuals have an essential role, with nearly 40 associations in La Laguna, and this event celebrates that reality,” he stated.
Free Transport Provided
The Mayor explained that the local council, through the Social Welfare and Quality of Life department led by María Cruz, provided free transportation to various elderly centres in the municipality. “We do not want anyone to miss the opportunity to enjoy a festival designed for our elderly, where music, emotion, and humour take centre stage,” stated the councillor, noting that this festival is funded in collaboration with the department of festivities.
