The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Works and Machinery Service and in coordination with the Betancuria Town Hall and other island services, is actively involved in the enhancement of infrastructure and natural sites where the main events in honour of Our Lady of La Peña, the patron saint of Fuerteventura, will take place. The island president, Lola García, and the area councillor, Blas Acosta, emphasise the importance of these measures. They aim to ensure that the environment is in the best possible condition for the arrival of pilgrims. Additionally, these efforts also seek to guarantee the safety and comfort of walkers during their journey.

Teams from the ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ programme are conducting clearance tasks in the Betancuria ravine up to the village of Vega del Río Palmas. Their efforts focus on cutting back vegetation and removing waste from the area.

These actions, along with the application of gravel in certain zones, enhance accessibility and safety for the thousands attending the La Peña events.

Particularly significant are the works concerning the ravine’s channel, which include trimming and clearing weeds, as well as dry palm fronds and bushes that could obstruct the natural flow of water during rainfall. This work is being carried out both in the channel and at the entry and exit points of the cross-drainage structures, minimising the risk of flooding that could disrupt the celebrations.

The ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ initiative, directed by Blas Acosta and contracted to Gesplan, involves actions over a 15-month period from 2024 to 2025. During this timeframe, a total of four million euros will be invested in nearly a hundred “community-focused actions”. These initiatives directly contribute to the conservation of the natural environment, improving visitor perceptions and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
