Exhibition of Cartoons by José Farruqo Opens at the Canary Islands Parliament
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 12 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The exhibition hall of the Canary Islands Parliament is hosting a display by cartoonist José Farruqo titled ‘Tele Canaria Cartoons’, organised by Radio Televisión Canaria, until 26 September.
Exhibition Overview
The exhibition features nearly one hundred original cartoons created live by Farruqo for the programme ‘Buenos Días Canarias’, where he has collaborated daily for the past year.
With his agile and ironic style, Farruqo provides a critical perspective on current events each morning through his drawings, inviting viewers to reflect on the day’s topics with humour.
Inauguration Event
The inauguration was attended by María Méndez, the General Director of RTVC; Gustavo Matos, the Vice President of the Parliament; Francisco Pomares, a journalist and President of the Cinema+Comics Foundation; and Farruqo himself, who presented his illustrations to a group of Social Journalism students, who attended the opening event to engage with the creator.
During the inauguration, María Méndez highlighted Farruqo’s “brilliance” and his ability to produce outstanding artistic work live and in real-time. She emphasised that his cartoons offer an intelligent and elegant perspective on current affairs through graphic humour.
Importance of Humour
Gustavo Matos stated that “democracy cannot be understood without humour,” asserting that graphic humour is “one of the most subtle and intelligent ways to challenge the status quo.”
Francisco Pomares commended Televisión Canaria for moving the cartoon from paper to screen, showcasing an artist who can create in minutes based on what unfolds live during the daily discussion.
Farruqo expressed that this project has been “the best gift in a challenging year,” as it gives him the motivation to continue working in a profession that is “as beautiful as it is hard.”
He noted that the public’s reception and the recognition through the programme encourage him to keep bringing humour and reflection to the citizens.
Visit the Exhibition
All original cartoons can be visited free of charge in the Parliament’s hall until 26 September, on weekdays from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, with morning hours on Saturdays.
‘Tele Canaria Cartoons’ is part of the exhibition catalogue for the XXII International Comic and Illustration Salon of Tenerife, which this year features more than forty physical exhibitions and ten virtual collective presentations.
Following its run at the Canary Islands Parliament in Tenerife, the exhibition will travel to the capital of Gran Canaria.
