The Casa Amarilla on Calle Real in Lanzarote’s capital has unexpectedly become a pilgrimage site for romantics and culinary connoisseurs. Surprisingly, it is not the exhibitions that draw visitors but rather the lovers of fine dining who rediscover flavours and aromas that they believed long forgotten, evoking smiles and memories of their loved ones.
The Launch of “Cocina Tradicional de Lanzarote”
After engaging with those connected to the island’s culinary traditions, the Cabildo of Lanzarote made José (Fefo) Nieves Caraballo’s book, “Cocina Tradicional de Lanzarote”, available to the general public upon request.
It is now rare to find the Casa Amarilla without people eagerly anticipating the book’s arrival. In its nearly 180 pages and more than 160 traditional recipes, Fefo Nieves appeals not only to the stomach but also to the heart. Through his broths, stews, meats, fish, seafood, accompanying mojos, desserts, and delightful mistelas, the remarkable Fefo transports us back decades, enveloping us in aromas and memories that stir the soul, leaving us with the ultimate rewarding sensation that good cooking aims to deliver.
A Culinary Guardian
Fefo firmly stands as an unwavering guardian of the island’s culinary memory. His proud and humble work touches upon the hagiography of our ancestors’ tables, reviving the cherished memories of spoons and forks from the past. With his book, an unyielding testament to our culinary heritage, Fefo has created a timeless and resplendent work that will outlast us all, bringing the joys of our palates to future generations. “Brevis oratio et longa manducatio” (brief speech and long meal), as the Latins wisely asserted. Fefo Nieves invites us to set down our pens and encourages us to savour the dishes contained within his pages.
