The main façade of the Ayuntamiento de La Laguna hosted the presentation of the poster and programme for the Fiestas del Cristo 2025 yesterday. This edition’s agenda will feature over fifty cultural, religious, sporting, and popular events, scheduled to take place in the city between 4th and 21st September.

The announcement of the Fiestas del Cristo events was attended by the Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez; the Councillor for Fiestas, Dailos González; the chief steward of Christ, Eladio Alexis Díaz; the rector of the sanctuary, Víctor Álvarez; and local artist Nareme Melián, creator of this edition’s official poster.

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasised “the grandeur of this festival, which is part of our city’s intangible heritage and has provided unforgettable memories for many generations of residents who have participated in these events since childhood.”

Tribute to the Battle of Flowers During the Fiestas del Cristo

“This spirit has driven us to strengthen the most representative events of the Fiestas del Cristo and to revive activities from the past that have remained in our collective memory, which we do not want to fade. An example is the announcing parade that will pay tribute to the former Battle of Flowers, which used to parade through the historic centre and will return this year with local groups,” he added.

Finally, the Mayor explained that the programme for the Fiestas del Cristo 2025 has been designed for all ages, with special attention given to events like the Festival for the Elderly (8th September) and the three Saturdays of the Children’s Fair (6th, 13th, and 20th September), ensuring fun and surprises for the little ones.

Dailos González highlighted “the involvement of groups, entities, associations, and individuals who contribute each year to the enrichment of the most important fiestas in our city,” and announced that the agenda will officially commence next Thursday, 4th September, with the reading of the proclamation, which this year will be delivered by the Club Baloncesto Canarias.

“From that moment on, an extensive programme will unfold, bringing to the city renowned national and international artists and groups such as José Vélez, Estrellas de Buenavista Social Club, Love of Lesbian, Edwin Rivera, Marilia Monzón, and Locoplaya, among other prominent names,” the councillor added.

Cherished events will also be featured, including the XLVII Sabandeño Festival (6th September), the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra concert (7th September), the IV Inclusive Fair (10th September), the performance by Los Cantadores (12th September), the Pandorga and Fire Ponies parade, the Night of Traditions (13th September), and the Night of Comedy (17th September), which will include performances by Abubukaka and Antonia San Juan.

Sporting events will also play a part in the Fiestas del Cristo, with the XLIV Popular Race of the Christ (6th September), various stages of the LXV Vuelta Ciclista a Tenerife passing through the city, the Echo Hy-Race 2k25, and the Mixed Basketball Tournament (both on 13th September), among others.

Meanwhile, the chief steward of Christ detailed the religious events of the festival, including the ceremony of the descent and the procession of the image of the Most Holy Christ of La Laguna towards the Cathedral (9th September), culminating with the major day featuring the Eucharist and the return procession on 14th September.

Nareme Melián explained the creative process behind this year’s poster, “where I wanted to revisit the aesthetics and origins of this image, giving absolute prominence to the sculpture, particularly its left profile, which is not often highlighted in portraits and photographs. Throughout these months, I have had the opportunity to view the sculpture up close, and it has conveyed a great beauty to me, stemming from its simplicity in technique and process. This approach inspired me to use everyday elements such as iconic BIC pens, combined with watercolour, to sketch this poster,” he noted.

“As a resident of La Laguna, it is an honour to take on this responsibility, and for that reason, I wanted to reflect what these festas signify with the representative green of Anaga, the blue symbolising our coastline, and the red associated with the passion of Christ,” he concluded.
