New Association for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries in the Canary Islands
Introduction of the New Collective
A new collective, operating at a regional level, will unveil its leadership and objectives next Thursday, 25th September, at 16:00 at the Liceo Taoro in La Orotava. This public event will feature a lecture by Professor Manuel Hernández González, a historian from the University of La Laguna.
The primary sector in the Canary Islands now has a new collective championing its interests. Notably, this is the first association in the Archipelago that unites all subsectors, including farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen. Comprising members from various islands, including La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria, it aims to bolster collaboration across the region.
Official Presentation
Officially named the Asociación de Trabajadores de la Tierra Canaria (Association of Canary Island Farmers), this entity will present its governing board during the public event. The board will articulate the goals of this newly established association, which include raising awareness among Canarian society about the critical importance of strengthening agriculture, livestock, and fishing. This initiative aims to enhance the Archipelago’s food sovereignty and reduce its current reliance on imports.
Additionally, the event will feature a lecture by Professor Manuel Hernández González, who will discuss the historical significance of the primary sector in the Canary Islands.
A Regional Initiative
The Asociación de Trabajadores de la Tierra Canaria was formed by a group of professionals from various islands who are concerned about the present and future of the agricultural sector in the Canary Islands. This sector faces numerous challenges, including high production costs, competition from imported goods and products from third countries, a lack of generational transition, and an inadequate legal framework to encourage entrepreneurship and the solidification of agricultural projects.
The board invites entrepreneurs and workers from the primary sector, as well as the general public, to attend this event in La Orotava. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about this new associative movement and, should they find the association’s goals and proposals beneficial, consider joining.
