The second forest fire outbreak declared on Saturday afternoon on the island of El Hierro, occurring on the slope adjacent to the Mirador de Las Playas, has been reported as controlled, according to information from the Cabildo of El Hierro on their social media platforms.
“Sources from the firefighting management have reported that the fire on the slope adjacent to the Mirador de Las Playas has now been controlled and extinguished, subsequently classified as a secondary focus,” stated the message issued by the island institution late this afternoon.
However, extinction and perimetre efforts are still ongoing at the main focus in the area of Las Asomadas, near La Cumbre road. Both fire outbreaks were declared simultaneously around 14:15 on Saturday.
According to the Cabildo, the second outbreak was caused by ‘paveseo’ transported from the main focus, located in the lower area of La Mareta, known as Teloje, towards the Masilva mountain and Curva de Los Corrales.
Currently, efforts are underway to secure the primary outbreak in Las Asomadas, which is presently showing “good” prospects for control.
AIR RESOURCES
In response to this emergency, alongside ground personnel, nine air resources from the Government of the Canary Islands have joined the firefighting efforts. This includes three helicopters from the EIRIF, one belonging to the GES of El Hierro, two from the BRIF of La Palma, the 9D based in Tenerife, and an air tractor from La Gomera.
Additionally, as a precaution, the Island Operational Coordination Centre has evacuated the Hoya del Morcillo camping area.
