The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Department of Environment, has successfully rehabilitated and released a Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus). The bird was discovered on 10 May at a roundabout in Tesjuate, within the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, following multiple reports from the public. The vulture suffered severe injuries, including a fractured left humerus, the cause of which remains unknown. The Cabildo of Fuerteventura releases a vulture following its recovery

After receiving the necessary surgery, the vulture was transferred to the Recovery Centre at the Biological Station of La Oliva, where it was treated and underwent physiotherapy for its rehabilitation. The wildlife recovery area is dedicated to animals that require specialised care due to various circumstances, with the primary goal of returning them to their natural environment after adequate recovery.

Environment Councillor Carlos Rodríguez stated that “the recovery and release of this vulture is the result of collective efforts to protect our natural heritage, demonstrating the effectiveness of the rescue and rehabilitation protocols implemented by specialised teams.”

Rodríguez also highlighted the crucial role of public collaboration in the species’ recovery. The Environment department reminds citizens to report any injured wildlife by calling 112 to ensure they receive proper care and contribute to their conservation.

Fuerteventura is home to approximately 400 Egyptian vultures, of which 50% are breeding pairs. A positive sign is that the population increases by about twenty vultures each year as they reach adulthood. This growth is made possible by ongoing protective efforts from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as public awareness initiatives.
