Preparations for La Peña in Betancuria

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Works and Machinery service, is actively collaborating with the Betancuria Town Council and other local services to enhance the infrastructure and natural areas where the main events in honour of Our Lady of La Peña, the patroness of Fuerteventura, will take place.

Islander president, Lola García, and the councillor for the area, Blas Acosta, emphasise the importance of these measures to ensure that the environment is in the best possible condition for the arrival of pilgrims. These actions also aim to enhance the safety and comfort of walkers during their journey.

Cleaning and Safety Measures

Teams from the ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ programme are conducting clean-up operations in the Betancuria gorge up to the village of Vega del Río Palmas. Their efforts focus on clearing and pruning the edges of the gorge, as well as removing waste.

These initiatives, along with the application of soil stabilisation in certain areas, improve the mobility and safety of the thousands participating in the La Peña events.

Flood Prevention Efforts

Particular attention is given to work on the riverbed of the gorge, specifically the pruning and removal of weeds, dry palm fronds, and shrubs that could obstruct the natural flow of water during rainfall. This includes both the riverbed and the entries and exits of transversal drainage works. These measures help minimise the risk of flooding that could detract from the celebrations.

Ongoing Commitments to Conservation

The ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ project led by Blas Acosta’s department includes actions over a period of 15 months, from 2024 to 2025. During this time, four million euros of self-financing will be invested in nearly a hundred “local actions” that directly impact the conservation of the natural environment, the positive perception of visitors, and the quality of life for residents.
