Central Government Expands Guardia Civil Personnel in the Canary Islands
The central government increases the Guardia Civil workforce in the Canary Islands by 169 agents, aligning the island’s security needs with operational requirements.
The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced on Monday from the Government Subdelegation in Tenerife the incorporation of 169 Guardia Civil personnel into the archipelago starting this summer. He also indicated that the deployment of additional agents will continue.
Specifically, the islands receiving the most agents are Tenerife and Fuerteventura, with 66 and 30 agents, respectively. They are followed by Gran Canaria with 27, Lanzarote with 20, La Palma with 13, La Gomera with 10, and El Hierro with three.
“This is a commitment from the Government of Spain and the Ministry of the Interior to our archipelago. It is excellent news as it meets a request from local authorities, such as the cabildos and municipal councils, thereby responding to a need in the Canary Islands,” he stated in a press release issued by the Government Delegation.
Torres emphasised that these officials, who have been in the Canary Islands for their training period since last July, address a necessity highlighted by local administrations, and he reiterated that the number of personnel will continue to increase.
Other reinforcements in recent months have included the appointment of a lieutenant colonel for the Canary Islands Zone, a commander for the Vecindario Company, and a sergeant for the CCRV (security camera system) in the Canary Islands.
