The current breakwater will be extended by approximately 278 metres to create an outer harbour and accommodate three berths for commercial ships, including ferries and cruise ships.
The Canary Island Government approved a decree on Friday, proposed by the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, led by Pablo Rodríguez. This decree declares the execution of the renovation and expansion of Gran Tarajal port, located in the municipality of Tuineje, as a project of exceptional public interest.
Addressing Safety Concerns
This initiative aims to expedite various actions intended to resolve the existing safety issues affecting the port infrastructure, particularly in light of adverse weather conditions and storms that have caused significant damage in the past.
A Strategic Maritime Hub
Gran Tarajal port, which began operations in the 19th century, is a strategic location for maritime connectivity and economic development in the municipality of Tuineje. It serves both commercial and recreational activities.
Supporting the Fishing Industry
Its primary role is to support fishing activities in the southeast sector of Fuerteventura, while also enhancing communications with other coastal areas of the island and Gran Canaria, according to a government statement.
Rising Demand for Maritime Transport
Additionally, the declaration of exceptional public interest is justified by the increasing demand for maritime transport in the Canary Islands, which has witnessed a rise of over two million passengers in recent years.
Key Planned Actions
The main planned actions include the extension of the current breakwater by approximately 278 metres to create an outer harbour and to adapt three berths for commercial vessels, including ferries and cruise ships.
Furthermore, the redesign of the inner harbour will involve expanding by around 33 metres the construction of new docks to optimise their use, improve protection from external waves, and increase berthing capacity for recreational boats.
The land area will also be extended and organised to include superstructures and services for recreational boating (such as a yacht club, changing rooms, and shops), while separating vehicular traffic to enhance circulation.
Enhancing Port Facilities
The project includes improvements to the shelter of the docks, the creation of new berths for medium to large cruise ships, the adaptation of spaces for recreational craft, and the consolidation of services aimed at fishing.
Boosting Economic and Tourist Activities
These actions will not only enhance the safety of users and vessels but also stimulate the economic and tourist activities of the municipality and the island.
Community Engagement in Project Development
The Canary Islands Government, through the Vice Ministry of Infrastructure led by Francisco González, has worked on developing the project through a dialogue process, gathering concerns from local administrations, associations, and community groups in the area.
This methodology has facilitated the creation of a more consensual project, ensuring respect for the environment and strengthening the commitment to the local community.
