Celebrations Set to Conclude with El Consorcio Concert

The extensive programme of events will close on Tuesday with a concert by El Consorcio, showcasing the most popular hits from their 50 years of musical history.

The Romería Ofrenda to Our Lady of the Pine

The Romería Ofrenda to Our Lady of the Pine will bring together all of Gran Canaria in Teror this Sunday, 7th September, for one of the most popular events of the Fiesta del Pino.

According to the Teror Town Council, at 15:30, 22 carts from various municipalities on the island, including one from the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, will depart from Castañero Gordo to Plaza del Pino. They will be accompanied by thousands of pilgrims and representatives from the islands.

At 16:00, the statue of the Virgin of the Pine will emerge onto the Basilica’s portico to mark the official beginning of this much-anticipated event, which includes the participation of 22 carts.

This traditional event, now in its 73rd year since its establishment in 1952 by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria at the suggestion of the island’s chronicler and folklorist, Néstor Álamo, attracts large crowds. This year, it coincides with the weekend and the public holiday on Monday, so massive participation is expected.

The 21 municipalities of the island, plus the representation of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, will parade before the Patroness of the Diocese of Canary Islands (province of Las Palmas) to showcase the best of their produce, each accompanied by folklore and traditional dances.

A Celebration of Tradition

The traditional municipal carts, popular songs from the Canary Islands, local products, typical attire, and, above all, religious fervour and solidarity, will all blend together in this grand celebration for the people of Gran Canaria.

The Fireworks Display

Meanwhile, the fireworks for the Fiesta del Pino will light up the night of 7th to 8th September at midnight, launched from the space next to the Guaguas Station.

This pyrotechnic display, organised by the Teror Town Council, will last approximately 10 minutes and will be conducted by the local fireworks company, El Pilar, with fireworks expert Benjamín Dávila at the helm.

The colourful event will be carried out under a comprehensive safety plan, ensuring compliance with current regulations for the launch of various pyrotechnic devices. A total of approximately 90 kilos of gunpowder will be used.

Day of the Pine

On Monday, 8th September, the Fiesta del Pino will celebrate its main day in honour of Our Lady of the Pine, Patroness of the Diocese of Canary Islands (province of Las Palmas) and the island of Gran Canaria.

The Solemn Mass, officiated by the Bishop of the Diocese, Monsignor José Mazuelos, will be preceded by the official reception of the representative of His Majesty the King, the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, at 11:15. This will be followed by a military parade featuring the Infantry Regiment Canarias 50, accompanied by the War Band No. 1 of the Canarias 16 Brigade, the Music Unit of the Air Command of the Canary Islands, and the Honour Guard of the Air Command of the Canary Islands.

The Solemn Mass will commence at 12:00, and the procession will begin around 13:00, following a route through Calle Iglesia Chica, La Cal, Calle Nueva, Isaac Domínguez, and Calle Real de la Plaza. The procession will be accompanied by the Teror Music Band, conducted by Óscar Sánchez Benítez, as well as the War Band No. 1 of the Canarias 16 Brigade, a section of the Canarias 50 Regiment, and an Honour Guard from the Canarias 50 Regiment.

Rain of Petals

As in recent years, the procession will feature a rain of petals as the throne bearing the Virgin of the Pine passes by. Especially in Calle Real, thousands of petals will fall, a tradition known as the Petalada.

About twenty individuals will participate in this initiative, showering approximately 200,000 petals from several thousand roses from the roofs of two houses this year.

This community-driven initiative, marking its tenth anniversary, will feature an increased number of petals and flowers, collected through a public solidarity campaign to realise this visually stunning spectacle.

Ending the Festivities

El Consorcio will return to Teror on 8th September, the Day of the Pine, with their “From Mocedades to El Consorcio” tour, set to perform at the Plaza de Sintes from 21:00. The group, consisting of Amaya Uranga, Estíbaliz Uranga, Iñaki Uranga, and Carlos Zubiaga, who filled the Teror Auditorium in 2018, will present a selection of their 50 greatest hits from over five decades of career.
