The Gran Canaria Summer Artisan Fair kicked off this Friday with the presence of 73 artisans from 16 municipalities on the island, who have ten days ahead of them to showcase and sell their handmade items.

Organised by Infecar, Gran Canaria Fair, this 18th edition returns to the vicinity of the Maspalomas Lighthouse, a strategic location that allows both tourists and locals who are on holiday in the area to enjoy a selection of artisan crafts from Gran Canaria.

In this context, the island’s Economic Development, Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts Councillor, Minerva Alonso, emphasised at the inauguration of this summer event that it is “a space where artisans from Gran Canaria, representing 21 different crafts, will be present, transforming the area around the Maspalomas Lighthouse into a space of culture and identity, and most importantly, supporting the artisan sector of the island.”

The represented crafts include carpentry, ceramics, candle-making, metalwork, toy-making, and jewellery. Until 17 August, visitors will be able to discover and purchase items from artisans that represent this wide variety of crafts practised on the island, four of which are traditional (metalwork, forging and locksmithing, wood turning, traditional carpentry, and fabric decoration).

Regarding their origins, the artisans participating in this 18th edition of the fair come from various municipalities on the island, with the Gran Canaria capital being the most represented, featuring 26 professionals, followed by Agüimes with nine, and Telde with six. San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Ingenio contribute five and four professionals respectively, while Valsequillo, Santa Brígida, Firgas, and Arucas will each bring three artisans; Teror, Santa Lucía, Moya, and Agaete will do the same with two; the municipalities of Santa María de Guía, Gáldar, and Mogán are participating this time with one professional each.

In addition to the exhibition, each day, in the ‘Live Crafts’ space, visitors can enjoy live demonstrations of some of the most representative crafts, such as wool spinning, lacework, felt crafting, rush basketry, pottery, embroidery, rye basketry, knife-making, and stonemasonry.

On weekend afternoons during the fair, visitors exploring the three marquees that make up this exhibition can also enjoy several musical performances: after the concert by the Canarian folk band Asentaos y Tumbaos held on the first Friday of the fair, on Saturday 9 August it will be the turn of the Cuban music trio Kevin Carvallo, who will entertain from 18:30. For the second weekend of the fair, the guitar and voice duo composed of Zaida Jiménez and Juan Sebastián Ramírez will perform on Friday 15; and the folk trio of Alberto González, Iván Quintana and Juan Sebastián Ramírez will perform on Saturday 16 August. Both performances will take place at 20:00.

Opening hours of the Gran Canaria Summer Artisan Fair

The Gran Canaria Summer Artisan Fair will be open from 17:00 to 23:00, offering the ideal opportunity for artisans to showcase their work and demonstrate the quality of their products, which they can also sell after months of hard work.

In this sense, the event has solidified in recent years as a showcase for handmade work on the island and as a sales platform for quality artisan work, as well as a space for promoting the traditions and artisan legacy of the land, increasingly valued by the local public.

The official website of the event (www.feriasartesaniagrancanaria.es) has already published the list of artisans participating in this edition of the fair, along with the schedules and details of the live craft demonstrations and concerts.

Promoted and financed by the Gran Canaria Cabildo, through the Fund for Ethnography and Development of Canary Handicrafts (Fedac), which is attached to the Economic Development, Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts Ministry, the Summer Artisan Fair is organised by Infecar, Gran Canaria Fair, in collaboration with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council.
