Gran Canaria U22 Win 2025 Los Dolores Basketball Tournament

The Gran Canaria U22 team has been crowned champions of the 2025 Los Dolores Basketball Tournament, organised by CB Tizziri Tinajo and supported by local institutions and sponsors. Beyond the competition, the event held a significant emotional weight, serving as a tribute to the recently deceased player and coach, Pablo Brieba.

Support and Participating Teams

The tournament received backing from the Cabildo of Lanzarote through its Insular Sports Service, the Tinajo Town Hall, the Canary Basketball Federation, and the company Sia, along with main sponsorship from Club La Santa and Jadilanz Airecomprimido. Three teams participated at the Municipal Pavilion of Tinajo: the host CB Tizziri Tinajo, CD Toscones from Corralejo, and the Gran Canaria U22.

Match Highlights

The action commenced on Friday with a match between the organising team, which competes in the Interinsular Lanzarote-Fuerteventura League, and the majoreros from CD Toscones, preparing for their season in the Third FEB. The Corralejo team triumphed with a score of 67 to 49.

On Saturday morning, Tizziri Tinajo faced the Gran Canaria U22, a team set to compete in the newly established national under-22 league. The superiority of the Claretian side was evident on the scoreboard, finishing at 118 to 47. In the afternoon, the decisive clash occurred, determining the title between the majoreros and the Gran Canarians. Gran Canaria U22 stamped their authority, winning 87 to 59 and lifting the champion’s trophy.

Ceremony and Tributes

The closing ceremony was attended by Fran Fortes, head of CB Tizziri Tinajo, Juan Monzón, the councilman for Physical Activity and Sport of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and Tinajo’s mayor, Jesús Machín. In addition to team trophies, Moussa Coulibay from Gran Canaria U22 was recognised as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.

However, the event extended beyond sports. Concurrent with the competition, a tribute was paid to the memory of Pablo Brieba, a player and coach of the Tinajo club who passed away recently. His family received a commemorative token from the club and institutions. The cadet players of Tizziri, whom he coached last season, shared heartfelt words, while CD Tinajo, the football club he also played for, joined in with a gesture of support for the family.

The most poignant moment came when Pablo Brieba’s father took the microphone to express gratitude for the displays of affection and acknowledge the commitment of all teams participating in a tournament his son had enthusiastically organised. The day concluded with a collective round of applause and a family photo that symbolised the unity of the sporting community around his legacy.

With hopes of the tournament continuing in future editions, the organisers emphasised their commitment to keeping Pablo Brieba’s memory alive while establishing this event firmly in the Canarian basketball calendar.
