Granadilla de Abona to Introduce Urban Bus Service

Granadilla de Abona is set to implement a urban bus service. The Town Council is currently working on its implementation, examining the development of three routes. Specifically, one will link the towns of Cruz de Tea, Charco del Pino, Los Llanos, El Salto, El Draguito and the centre of Granadilla; the second will connect Vicácaro, La Higuera, the town centre, Los Blanquitos, El Desierto, Chimiche, Las Rosas, and Las Vegas, while the third will run through San Isidro, La Vaguada, Castro, Atogo, Casablanca, Chuchurumbache and the preferred stop at the San Isidro roundabout.

These routes will help to structure the municipality, enhance internal mobility, and connect residents in more dispersed areas with the main bus stops located in the urban centre of Granadilla de Abona and the lower area of San Isidro. The focus is primarily on ensuring that this service meets the demands of the local population according to their work schedules.

Expected Implementation Before Summer

The current projection by the municipal government in collaboration with the public transport company Titsa is for the service to begin trial operations in the second quarter of next year. The commitment reached is for the municipality to have an efficient, accessible, and tailored system by 2026, “marking a milestone in the improvement of local mobility.”

The project, which began developing in 2022, when the administration took initial steps to acquire a share in Titsa and include the council in this initiative, aims to create several strategic routes designed to serve areas with lower population density and greater difficulty accessing public transport.

The current cost estimate for the service is around €400,000, funded by the Town Council of Granadilla de Abona. This amount will facilitate the creation of new routes expected to accommodate 90,000 travellers annually, according to the estimates provided by the Council.

The mayor, José Domingo Regalado, asserts that “public transport must reach all corners of the municipality, and this project addresses a longstanding demand.” He maintains that the goal is to “ensure equal opportunities in terms of mobility for all citizens, regardless of where they live.”

Tailored to Community Needs

Regalado emphasises the commitment of the governing body, stating that “linking the more dispersed communities with the more populated areas means improving the quality of life for many people who currently lack regular transport services.” The mayor is confident that, “by 2026, Granadilla de Abona will have a modern urban transport service tailored to the needs of our citizens.”

The urban transport service is one of the measures included in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) of Granadilla de Abona.
