Gran Tarajal has launched the 50th Youth Week, a commemorative edition taking place from 18th to 31st August, backed by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. According to the island corporation, the Youth Department has increased the budget for the collaboration agreement to 16,000 euros, aimed at strengthening a programme targeted at diverse audiences.

The event is organised by the Tuineje Town Council, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Youth Department of the Cabildo, and the Cultural Department, which supports the photographic exhibition Years of Salt: 50 Years of Being Young, by photographer Carlos de Saá.

The inaugural event, held this Tuesday, opened with a tribute to the first organising committee and to Charo Prado, a historical advocate of the event. The ceremony gathered more than a hundred individuals linked to the commissions from the past five decades, as reported by the organisers, and was attended by the island president, Lola García; the Cabildo’s Youth Councillor, Adargoma Hernández; the Deputy Cultural Councillor of the Government of the Canary Islands, Horacio Umpiérrez; the Mayor of Tuineje, Candelaria Umpiérrez; the Youth Councillor, David Herrera; and the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Pedro Rodríguez.

The programme includes cultural, musical, and sporting activities, with events that, according to the organisers, consolidate Youth Week as a leading event in the Canary Islands. Among the musical highlights is the ‘Summer Sound Festival’, featuring performances by La Regadera, Renzzo, Mejor con Copas, La Banda del Cuco, and Saylen, among other artists.

One of the central events will be the ‘Canarian Pride Urban Fest’, scheduled for 28th August at the fairground, headlined by La Pantera. The programme will conclude with performances by Nuevo Klan, Klandestino, and DJ Valdi from ‘El Hormiguero’, followed by the traditional batucada, which will mark the final celebration of the festivities.
