The Canary Islands are bracing for another day of extreme heat, as the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated its weather forecast for the region. According to the latest bulletin, the ongoing heatwave will intensify on Thursday, with temperatures expected to exceed 38 °C in some areas, particularly in the southern interior of Gran Canaria.
Yellow and orange alerts remain active across the archipelago, and conditions are forecast to become even more severe as the weekend approaches.
AEMET confirms a general rise in temperatures on Thursday across the islands. Daytime highs of 34 °C or more are expected in several parts of the archipelago, especially in southern, eastern, and western regions. However, even northern areas may see similar values.
The most critical conditions are forecast for the southern interior of Gran Canaria, where localised peaks above 38 °C are possible.
In addition to scorching daytime conditions, minimum (night-time) temperatures will remain abnormally high, particularly in the most affected zones. Values of 25–27 °C are expected in many areas, with mid-altitude regions potentially experiencing lows no cooler than 26–28 °C, exacerbating the heat index and making night-time discomfort a growing concern.
AEMET also forecasts mostly clear skies across the Canary Islands. However, some cloud cover may appear along the northern coastal areas.
A light calima (dust haze from the Sahara) is expected to affect Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the mid-altitudes of other islands. This reduced visibility will add to the perceived humidity, intensifying the feeling of heat.
Trade winds will blow with stronger gusts on the northwest and southeast coasts, particularly in the afternoon. Inland areas on the southwest flanks of mountainous islands will experience breezes, while light to moderate winds from the east and northeast are forecast at higher altitudes.
The latest alert status issued by AEMET and regional authorities is as follows:
- Gran Canaria: Orange alert (significant risk) for extreme temperatures
- Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro: Yellow alert (moderate risk)
The Government of the Canary Islands has also:
- Declared a state of alert in Gran Canaria due to wildfire risk resulting from the extreme heat
- Issued a pre-alert for maximum temperatures across the western province
Meteorologists anticipate that the heatwave will reach its peak over the weekend, with the entire region remaining under close observation due to the combined risk of extreme heat, high fire danger, and poor air quality caused by dust and low humidity.
Residents and visitors are urged to follow official guidance, take preventive health measures, and stay informed through AEMET and the regional emergency services.
