Historic Agreement Unblocks Long-Awaited Sewer Project in El Golfo

Oswaldo Betancort: “Today we take a historic step that unlocks a project stalled for years and meets a just demand from the residents of El Golfo”

Domingo Cejas: “The technical team of the Water Consortium has worked professionally to make this signing possible and to recover lost time due to the previous government’s inaction”

The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the contracting company, UTE Tiagua-Horinsa, signed the project replanning act on Tuesday, allowing the commencement of sanitation works in the coastal town of El Golfo, in the municipality of Yaiza.

This project, awarded for €1.4 million with an execution period of ten months, includes the installation of a wastewater treatment plant (EDAR), the construction of a sewage network, and a system for storing and reusing treated water. It is a long-awaited initiative that had been stalled for years and which the current governing body, led by Oswaldo Betancort, has managed to launch in record time.

Commitment to Residents

The president of the Cabildo and the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, stated, “Today we take a historic step that unlocks a project stalled for years and meets a just demand from the residents of El Golfo. This government committed to unblocking it, and we have delivered. The signing of the replanning act guarantees that the machines will enter and that the transformation of the locality is now a reality. We keep our word and secure public investment to ensure we do not lose state funding for this work, which originated from an agreement established in 2017, with a deadline of December this year.”

Emphasis on Professionalism

Meanwhile, the Councillor for Water and Vice President of the Water Consortium, Domingo Cejas, highlighted the effort made to reach this point, stating, “Today marks the start of the execution period for a strategic project that will ensure a qualitative leap in the quality of life for residents and in the environmental sustainability of El Golfo. The technical team of the Consortium has worked diligently to make this signing possible, ensuring that the residents of El Golfo do not suffer from the inaction of the previous government. Abandoning this project was never an option for the current island government.”

A replanning act formally accepts that the contractor can begin work, confirms that the location matches the project plans for execution, and marks the start of the contractual timeline for completion.

With this document, the El Golfo sanitation project officially commences after years of delays.
