Basketball player Hugo Hermosilla will play this season for Virtus Monte Di Procida in the Italian Serie D.

Guard Hugo Hermosilla, originally from Haría, is trading Tinajo for Monte di Procida this year, a small town in the south of Italy, part of the metropolitan city of Naples in the Campania region. Born in 1996, he is ready to bring his talent and 185-centimetre height to the Italian squad.

Beginnings in Basketball

Hermosilla began playing basketball at the young age of twelve. As he moves away from home, memories of his early basketball days resurface: “From playing for Grubati with Jonathan Castellano in my first year to a final year with the cadets at Conejero with Iván Fernández, but perhaps what I cherish the most are my two years at CB Haría, in my hometown, trained at that time by Isaac Pérez, where I shared the court with my best friends, Gabriel Pérez and Carlos Mancera, whom I don’t want to forget.”

New Challenges Ahead

“In my senior stage, I have played for La Rioja ABN in Nájera and CB Cenicero. In Lanzarote, I was with CB Conejero and Tizziri Tinajo. Now it’s time for me to give my all at Virtus Monte Di Procida. It’s a club with a good reputation in the Campania region. I know they strongly support local young players’ continuity. They combine this youth continuity with a commitment to talented and experienced players who add value to the group. This year, I hope to give my best performance every time I step onto a basketball court. Like anyone who has played a sport and feels that passion and those emotions when you play, that thought or dream of any child—to live such an experience, dedicating yourself to the sport you love, in another place, another country, with another language—is enriching. If you don’t experience it, you will regret it for the rest of your life.”

Honouring a Friend

Regarding the passing of one of his friends in Tinajo, Pablo Brieba, Hermosilla addressed the tributes paid to him and the affection that the Lanzarote basketball community has shown: “The tribute offered by Tizziri Tinajo this weekend was tremendous. He wasn’t just a friend or team-mate; he was a brother. There are many memories shared both on and off the court. I believe Pablo is the person with whom I have played the most matches by my side. He always supported me and celebrated my achievements as if they were his own. I will never forget what he did for me. He was well-known in many areas of life for his way of relating to people, and his character is what made him stand out from the rest. I am sure no one will forget him. From now on, every point I score will be for him,” concluded Hugo Hermosilla, clarifying, “I will certainly return to the basketball courts of Lanzarote.”

Good luck in Italy, Hugo. In bocca al lupo, amico mio.
