This initiative, taking place on 12th September, aims to raise awareness among the people of Lanzarote about this reality and provide a space for gathering and reflection.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente, presented the First Awareness Day on Childhood Cancer this morning, 3rd September, in the Assembly Hall of the insular Corporation.
Attending the presentation were the Councillor for Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, and the President of the Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente, José Jerez Castro.
Councillor Marci Acuña emphasised the insular Institution’s commitment to social causes and public health. “Childhood cancer affects the entire society, and every effort we make to improve care for families is invaluable,” he stated.
“The establishment of Pequeño Valiente in Lanzarote has been very positive, as they now have an office, psychological support services, and continuous assistance for families,” the Councillor highlighted.
For his part, the Foundation’s President, José Jerez, expressed gratitude for the insular Corporation’s support for both this inaugural event and the maintenance of Casa Pipa, a home that provides a safe space for families from Lanzarote during treatments in Gran Canaria.
This first awareness day will be held next Friday, 12th September, from 9:00 to 13:30, in the plenary hall of the Cabildo. It will feature contributions from health professionals, testimonies from affected families, and activities aimed at raising societal awareness about this issue.
Additionally, the event will include presentations from professionals such as paediatrician María del Carmen Segoviano and psychologist Olga Díez García, as well as the screening of the documentary ‘Camino Vital’, which captures the experiences of adolescents from the Foundation during their journey along the Camino de Santiago.
A round table discussion with family members and specialists will also take place, addressing the emotional, medical, and social aspects related to childhood cancer.
Women and Donation: Focus of the Day
The First Awareness Day on Childhood Cancer will place special emphasis on the role of women as primary caregivers during the childhood cancer journey, as well as the importance of continuous blood and marrow donation as a vital gesture that helps save lives.
“We want to highlight the essential role of mothers in caring for children, and use this day to stress the importance of regular blood and marrow donation, as every contribution can save lives,” concluded the Foundation’s President, José Jerez.
The event will be open to the public through prior registration via the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/
A certificate of attendance will be provided for those who require one for work purposes, and a coffee break will be offered to attendees.
