First Childhood Cancer Awareness Day in Lanzarote on 12th September. Pre-registration required
The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Canary Foundation Pequeño Valiente, today announced the First Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, set to take place on Friday, 12th September, from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, at the Assembly Hall of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
The event aims to raise awareness about childhood cancer, provide a space for families and professionals to connect, and highlight the significant role of women as primary caregivers during children’s cancer treatment.
Event Presentation
The presentation of the day took place in the Assembly Hall of the Insular Corporation and was attended by:
- Marci Acuña, Councillor for Social Welfare and Inclusion.
- José Jerez Castro, President of the Canary Foundation Pequeño Valiente.
Councillor Marci Acuña emphasised the commitment of the Cabildo to social causes and public health, stating, “Childhood cancer touches everyone, and all efforts made to improve care for families are invaluable.”
In turn, José Jerez expressed gratitude to the Cabildo for supporting the celebration of this inaugural event and for maintaining the Pipa House, a refuge providing families from Lanzarote with a safe space during treatments in Gran Canaria.
Event Activities
The event will feature:
- Expert presentations, including paediatrician María del Carmen Segoviano and psychologist Olga Díez García.
- Screening of the documentary ‘Camino Vital’, which captures the experiences of adolescents from the Foundation on their journey along the Camino de Santiago.
- Roundtable discussion with families and specialists, covering medical, emotional, and social aspects of childhood cancer.
- Aware-raising activities, focusing on the role of women as caregivers and the importance of donating blood and bone marrow consistently.
“We wish to highlight the essential role of mothers in caring for children and leverage this day to stress the importance of blood and bone marrow donation, as every contribution can save lives,” explained José Jerez.
