The Ciudad Deportiva Pavilion in Lanzarote was the venue this weekend for the inaugural 3×3 Ciudad de Arrecife “Memorial Marcial Martín Rodríguez” tournament. This event saw participation from most teams across the island, evolving into a true celebration of island basketball.
Winners of the Tournament
The champions in the under-17 category were the team known as “Spencers,” followed closely by “Los Tamillas.” In the women’s category, “Ariagona 3×3” secured the second spot on the podium, while “El trío I” emerged victorious based on point difference. In the men’s category, the second place was taken by Maramajo’s representatives, branded as “Gymtonic,” with “La pella de Ajei SL” clinching the title.
Acknowledgments
During the trophy presentation, attended by Arrecife’s Mayor, Yonathan De León, and the Councillor for Sports, special recognition was given to the inclusive basketball teams, Magec Tías and Costa Teguise. Each player from both teams received an individual diploma.
Honouring Marcial Martín Rodríguez
Lastly, amidst applause from the audience, Marcial Martín Rodríguez’s family received a plaque. His brother, Ginés, proud and emotional, was presented with this heartfelt and well-deserved tribute by the Mayor of Arrecife.
Gratitude from the Organisers
Organisers of the tournament, canarias3x3.com, wish to extend their gratitude to the referees and table staff, as none of this would have been possible without them. They also thank the attendees and all participants, including the under-17, senior men’s and women’s, and inclusive categories, while remembering the legends of island basketball, many of whom were friends of Marcial Martín Rodríguez. They enjoyed a casual game on Saturday afternoon that transported many back to the early 2000s.
Canarias3x3.com and Marcial Martín Rodríguez’s family also wish to thank the Arrecife City Council, Mayor Yonathan de León, and Councillor for Sports, Eli Merino. Thanks are also due to the participating clubs, including Lanzabasket, Magec Tías, Roscachapas, Costa Teguise, and Maramajo, among others, with special appreciation to Ariagona for their invaluable assistance in organising a tournament that has been a true success—a basketball celebration for the island community, framed within the festivities of San Ginés. The organisers hope this marks the beginning of an annual event that will continue to honour the memory of Marcial Martín Rodríguez.
