New case of reckless driving in Tenerife. Officers from the Local Police of La Orotava reported several drivers for reckless driving in the San Jerónimo Industrial Estate over the past weekend, as informed by the municipality’s Area of Security and Emergencies.

“These types of offences carry a fine of 500 euros and the loss of six driving licence points,” the police reminded.

The incidents occurred in front of dozens of spectators in the area.

The surveillance operation was supported by the new traffic video surveillance system, which allows for greater control in the area. This tool is complemented by on-site checks and the involvement of the Local Police’s Drone Unit, enhancing monitoring capability at this location in the municipality.

Video Surveillance and Drones Against Recklessness

The new traffic video surveillance system implemented in La Orotava enables the Local Police to exert greater control in high-traffic areas, such as the San Jerónimo Industrial Estate.

These cameras are integrated into a device that combines remote monitoring with on-site checks and support from the Drone Unit, which reinforces real-time surveillance from the air.

The aim is to improve road safety and deter dangerous behaviours, such as reckless driving and illegal racing, particularly in areas where there are concentrated reports from residents regarding speeding or risky manoeuvres.

The Latest Recklessness in Tenerife

Incidents of recklessness such as the one this weekend in La Orotava are becoming increasingly common on the island. Evidence of this is one of the latest cases of misconduct on the roads, reported by Diario de Avisos.

On 20 August, the Civil Guard reported that it had cited eight individuals for reckless driving and for failing to use safety equipment while travelling on the TF-24 in the Teide National Park.

Social media footage showed several occupants of two rental vehicles sitting in the windows, with their upper bodies outside the cars and without seatbelts.

The Road Safety Investigation Unit (UNIS-GIAT) opened an investigation after detecting the video and deployed a task force involving officers from the Traffic Detachment of Granadilla de Abona and the Tax and Border Section of Tenerife South Airport.

The occupants were identified as foreign tourists who were about to return to their country. Citations were issued to the drivers for reckless driving and to the passengers for not wearing seatbelts.

In total, two fines of 500 euros with the deduction of six points from the driving licence and six sanctions of 200 euros were imposed, all paid in deposit as they were not residents in Spain.
