Haría Council Addresses Recent Complaints of Marine Pollution
The Haría Council, through its Health Department, in collaboration with the Lanzarote Water Consortium, has responded to recent public complaints regarding discharges into the sea and strong odours in the Punta Mujeres area.
Following a technical inspection and analyses conducted in the affected environment, it has been determined that the reported incidents are not due to wastewater discharges or failures in the sanitation network. The cause has been attributed to the proliferation of microalgae, a natural phenomenon that can occur under certain environmental conditions.
Clarification from the Mayor
Haría’s Mayor, Alfredo Villalba, reiterated in a press release on Wednesday, “We want to clarify to the public that no discharges have been detected in Punta Mujeres. This is a natural phenomenon of algal accumulation, which poses no risk to the health of residents.”
Health Councillor’s Assurance
In turn, the Health Councillor, Marcos Lemes, stated, “After conducting the analyses, we can confirm that this is not related to wastewater or any sanitation-related discharges.”
“The council will remain vigilant regarding the development of the situation and will continue working to keep our coastlines clean and safe,” concluded the councillor.
