Islénior strengthens support for elderly individuals with mental health issues

The Councillor for Social Action, Águeda Fumero, announces that, with this aim, APEDECA’s project is being incorporated into the Insular Ring of Social Policies, aimed at “ensuring comprehensive support for elderly individuals in the metropolitan area to prevent isolation and improve their emotional well-being”

The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the Insular Programme for Comprehensive Support for Senior Citizens, Islénior, is reinforcing its commitment to supporting elderly individuals with mental health issues, by incorporating APEDECA (Association for Assisting Dependent Individuals in the Canary Islands) into the Insular Ring of Social Policies, with a pilot project aimed at ensuring comprehensive support for elderly individuals in the metropolitan area, preventing isolation and improving their emotional well-being.

The Councillor for Social Action, Águeda Fumero, highlights that “we are continuing to work to strengthen a network of alliances between public administration and third sector entities, with the aim of improving the services we provide and offering increasingly specialised support,” adding that “we are deploying new services and actions in the insular territory, within the framework of Islénior, and more specifically, in the area that affects the well-being of individuals.”

This pilot project, funded with €35,000 by the IASS, aims to improve the mental health and quality of life of elderly individuals residing in their homes, particularly those in situations of isolation or social vulnerability, through a comprehensive, community-based, and person-centred approach.

Fumero explains that “the goal is to detect potential mental health issues early, as well as to prevent cognitive and emotional deterioration, and provide specialised interventions in the usual environment of elderly individuals.”

With a clear preventive, psychoeducational, and accessible approach, “the aim is to promote personal autonomy, avoid unnecessary institutionalisation, and establish a sustainable, sensitive support network tailored to the real needs of the elderly population, incorporating an evaluation system that will measure the programme’s impact and generate useful data for its continuous improvement and potential replication in other contexts.”
